S-Meter Lamp Replacement - 751A

This was posted on the Yahoo Group 751A on July 18, 2007.

The S-meter lamp is very easy to retrofit to those new white or
whatever colour you want to use I used the white LED’s in both of my
IC-751A’s I used a 1K resistor in series with the LED. The LED fits
the rubber groment just fine. You have to diffuse the led with a file
and blacken slightly the tip then you get even light across the meter
face. If you don’t do that you have a brighter circle in the center of
the meter. I used clear nail polish to insulate the positive end and
the resistor. I hope that helps Eric and others concerned. Enjoy your
IC-751A they are a great radio. I used mine for Field Day and Canada
day Contests operating CW. They still get great results for VE7NA our
club station. One has a FL-53A extra Filter the other has a FL-52A
filter in the extra slot.

There was also this post (on July 15, 2007 in the same Yahoo group) concerning lamp replacement.

Remove the top cover of the transceiver( 12 screw together,6screw on the top and 3-3 screw on the two side of the radio. After this you can see the S meter if you see in the transceiver from the top.At the backside of S-meter you can see the black rubber with two wires.Pull out this rubber from S-meter with your hand. You will see the lamp inside of the rubber. Are you sure the lamp is wrong?:Because I had the same problem some days ago,but I had a luck because my lamp was not burnt out just it was contact probleme somewhere.Check the lamp that is good or not.If it is not good change it with a new one.The wires of lamp goes to a panel. You can solder this 2 wires from panel. If you change it to a 3V Voltage led,you have to put a resistance in a wire. The low voltage led (3V) with resistance is ok for 12-14V.Without resistance the led will burnt out in a second.
